Redskins Alex Smith | Out for Season With His Broken Leg.

The Washington Redskins Alex Smith might have reached their breaking point on their injury crisis.

QB Alex Smith suffered both a broken tibia and fibia during Sunday's 23-21 loss to the Houston Texans and will undergo surgery as soon as possible, team head coach Jay Gruden announced.

Smith was carted off in the third quarter and had an air cast placed on his right leg after being sacked by Texans corner back Kareem Jackson and defensive end J.J. Watt. He was ruled out for the remainder of the game and replaced by backup Colt McCoy.

"I know it was very painful for him and heartbreaking for a lot of people," Gruden said after the game. He's a great guy and a hard worker and one of the key leaders on this football team. These things happen in pro football unfortunately. You just hate to see them happen to a guy like Alex. Knowing the type of guy he is, I think he'll bounce back."

Smith completed 12 of 27 passes for 135 yards and two interceptions before the injury. McCoy threw for 54 yards and a touchdown on 6-of-12 passing.

The Redskins were already playing with an offensive line thinned by season-ending injuries to starting guards Shawn Lauvao and Brandon Scherff. Wide receiver Paul Richardson was also placed on injured reserve.

Former Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann drew a comparison between Smith's injury and his own, which occurred 33 years ago to the day when he broke his leg against the New York Giants.

"Washington (6-4) entered the day with a two-game lead in the NFC East but now hold just a one-game advantage on the Dallas Cowboys ahead of the two rivals' Thanksgiving meeting."
